Chargers Track and Field Break School Records at Regionals

Varsity Track and Field at Regionals: Girls placed 4th overall, Boys placed 10th overall.

The Chargers competed at The Community School of Naples for the Regional meet on Saturday, May 6. The Chargers girls started out strong with excellent performances from Sonoma Kasica '24, winning the Javelin and setting another school record by throwing 45.87 meters (#1 in Florida, top 12 in the nation), and Layla  Petrovich '24 setting the school record in the discus with a mark of 34.14 meters, which was good for 2nd place. The final top 3 finish on the girls side came when Kaja Dionne '24 ran in the 400m dash placing 2nd, with an outstanding time of 58.33 seconds, after battling sickness the entire week. 

Girls Highlights: 
Sonoma Kasica '24 first place Javelin at 45.87m (school record)
Layla Petrovich '24 2nd place in Discus with 34.14m (school record)
Kaja Dionne '24 2nd place in 400 meter Dash
4x400m relay team Claire J.'27, Alexandra Estremera '26, Mylie McDonough '23, Kaja Dionne '24 4th place with 4:15.65 (school record)
Emerson Schreiner '23 4th place in Pole Vault 

The boys had strong performances in some key spaces as well. Jeremy Barton '23 put together a very good outing in Javelin placing second with a mark of 48.89m. Trey Fudge '23 shined running down the final stretch of the 400m dash, beating out a Carrollwood Day competitor to win the Regional title in the time of 49.88 seconds. This mark was also good for another school record! 

Boys Highlights:
Trey Fudge '23 first place in 400m Dash with 49.88s (school record) 
Jeremy Barton '23 3rd place in Javelin
Ahmad Crumity '25 4th place Triple Jump 13.14m (school record) and 5th place long jump

Other notable performances were 4th place finishes by the girls 4x400 meter relay team, setting a school record with a time of 4:15.65, and a 4th place finish by Ahmad Crumity in the triple jump, setting a new school record with a jump of 13.14m.

All in all it was a great day for Shorecrest. There are a total of 12 athletes who will be competing at the State meet on Wednesday, May 17.
