While wrapping up her second year as a part of Jane Goodall's Roots & Shoots National Youth Leadership Council, senior Caroline G had the opportunity to assist at University of Florida with Dr. Jane Goodall's last lecture of her current tour (she will be resuming again in the fall).
"I was able to meet with Kamilah Martin, Associate Director of Jane Goodall's Roots & Shoots, with whom I've only spoken online before. She will also be attending the summit at the University of Redlands this summer, where I will be able to meet everyone on the council! I brought [fellow Shorecrest senior] Hannah W. to this event, since she went with the group who saw Dr. Goodall speak last year at USF. This year, we set up and worked the merchandise booth.

In her lecture, Dr. Goodall explained her story, talked about her work in Africa, and also spoke about the future. She said that while travelling around the US and the world, she has met many young people who seem angry, hopeless, and even depressed about the state of the world. Because of this, many people are apathetic and just stop trying. This was especially touching because, at some points, I am that young person who feels hopeless and doesn't know what I can possibly to do change anything. One question she suggested we ponder was, 'How are we, the most intelligent species on Earth, yet destroying our planet?' To counter this confusing question, she explained that she still has hope because since we, humans, are the most intelligent species on Earth, we do have the capability to come together and create huge change. In addition, she believes very strongly in the power of young people, which is why she places so much importance on her youth organization, Roots & Shoots."
After the lecture, Caroline and Hannah were brought backstage to chat briefly with Dr. Goodall and take a photo with her.
