Shorecrest School

Making the Most of Offseason

Upper School News

This past summer, a few members of Shorecrest’s Varsity Basketball team took their commitment to being student-athletes to the next level. Having recently been named Captains of the team for the upcoming season, Graham Heckert '19, Omarhiyon Malcolm '19, and Jacob Channer '20 approached the summer with a heightened sense of urgency and purpose. While each of them worked on improving different skills as players, the common goal among the three of them was to become better leaders and to grow as teammates.

Coach Saunders’ intuition to entrust these three young men with the team was quickly confirmed by Graham, Jacob, and Omarhiyon’s consistent attendance to the team’s summer workouts. With this attendance, also came added attention to detail from each of the new Captains. For Graham, this summer was about getting back into game-shape and rehabbing following his shoulder injury the previous season. Charger fans will be delighted to know that Graham’s shoulder recovery is ahead of schedule and his shooting touch from outside looks as good as ever.

Omarhiyon took on the challenge of developing a perimeter game to accompany his impressive athleticism and ability to get to the basket, while Jacob, already a proficient perimeter player himself, focused on developing more effective ways to attack the paint.

All three Captains have made great strides towards becoming better players, but their dedication to improving is what should inspire their teammates and fellow students. The offseason is meant to be a time for rest and relaxation, but it can also be used as a time to grow and to learn. What an athlete chooses to do with this time can drastically define their outlook and performance for the upcoming season! It is no secret that in sports, you get out what you put in. Graham, Omarhiyon, and Jacob have put in a lot of work this offseason, so when it comes time for tipoff, they can get out there and give their all. Go Chargers!

Workouts will continue from 3:30-4:30pm in the weight room daily.
