Catching up with Girls Basketball

The Shorecrest Varsity Girls Basketball Chargers currently sit above .500 at 5-4 going into the holiday break.
After joining the 1,000 point club, Renice Dacres ‘19 was commemorated with a special basketball in her honor at the half time of the Calvary Christian Boys Basketball game.
The Chargers suffered a hard fought loss to the tune of 45-33 lost against Calvary Christian on December 7th. Mikera Patton ‘20 finished the game with an 18 point effort to go along with 7 rebounds and 6 steals.
After getting back to work on Monday afternoon, the Chargers hosted Cambridge Christian on Tuesday night. The girls played what would be their best team win of the season in a 72-27 victory! They shared the ball flawlessly and had 19 assists on 31 makes! Renice finished with 25 points, 17 rebounds (13 offensive rebounds), 5 assists, and 3 steals. Mikera finished with 23 points, 5 steals, and a team high 9 assists. Taylor H. ‘23 had a career high of 18 points on 7 for 11 shooting. She also finished with a career high in 3 pointers made with 4.
Head Coach Roddy Brown Jr. noted, "The majority of our students are ninth graders and below, but they are gaining valuable experience and success that is leading to them buying into what we are trying to accomplish as a group. Morgan Healy ’22 was an extremely bright spot for us in our loss to Calvary Christian; so much so that we had no choice but to insert her into the starting lineup. If she continues to be engaged along with the rest of her younger teammates, we are going to have a very solid foundation for the future and may be able to make a deep District run."
In their penultimate contest before exam week and holiday break, the Chargers travelled to Admiral Farragut for an early Thursday evening tilt. The Chargers won decisively 54-4. Nikki Ayers ‘22 nearly had a “double-double” with 11 points and 9 rebounds.
In reference to the game Brown said, “We knew that this one of the few teams that was younger and more inexperienced than us as a whole. We had an objective to use this game to focus on concepts we learned in practice over the week along with giving our younger students an opportunity to get a plethora of minutes in a competitive environment without worrying about the win/loss column.”
On Friday night, the Chargers went into enemy territory with 6 players (2 seniors, 3 freshmen, and an eighth grader) and nearly upset Keswick Christian. The final score was 54-50 and the Chargers were up with 6 minutes to go in the 4th quarter but ultimately ran out of gas. Renice D finished with 36 points and 20 rebounds. Nikki A had 14 points and 7 rebounds. Morgan H held their best shooter, who scored 19 points against them 2 weeks ago to only 5 points. It was truly hard fought and could have gone to either team.
As of Friday, December 14th, the Middle School Girls team sits at 3-1. They came up short in a last-second heart breaker against Indian Rocks Christian and lost 19-18. Coach Neil Stough said, “The girls played with incredible heart… but we let this one slip away.”
