Over the past year the Shorecrest campus has undergone a transformation. The completion and opening of the first floor of Charger Commons, the new 60,000 square foot facility made possible by the Transform Campaign, marks a major milestone in that transformation. To connect this new chapter of Shorecrest history to the time-honored tradition of "Celebrate the Arts" week, Shorecrest Performing Arts proudly presented the spring musical "Cinderella," April 11, 12, and 13 in the Janet Root Theatre at Shorecrest.
“The changes to our campus are not just about new buildings, but also about building an environment that supports engagement among students of all grade levels. As a result our community will be closer and more successful,” explains Cheryl Lee, Chair of the Performing Arts Department and the show’s choreographer. “By presenting 'Cinderella' at this time, we've selected a show that incorporates the magical feeling of a transformation, and encourages multi-grade-level bonding with extended grade levels in our cast."
The production featured a cast of seasoned Upper School Thespians as well as 22 Lower and Middle School students. The performance schedule included a matinee show with an alternate cast on Saturday, resulting in a broader community of performers and audiences. Little ones were able to enjoy the show without worries of staying awake past bedtime!

Rodgers + Hammerstein's "Cinderella" is the Tony Award®-winning musical from the creators of “Oklahoma!,” “The King and I,” “The Sound of Music” and more, that has delighted audiences with its surprisingly contemporary take on the classic tale. Shorecrest's lush production features an 11-piece orchestra, jaw-dropping transformations and all the moments audiences love — the pumpkin, the glass slipper and more — plus some surprises! This modern Cinderella is a fresh take on the early French version of the timeless fairy tale by Charles Perrault, with contemporary lingo and strong, female storybook figures. More than just a pretty face with the right shoe size, Cinderella is a spirited young woman who doesn’t let her rags trip her up in her quest for kindness, compassion and forgiveness. She longs to make the world a better place, and forces the Prince to open his eyes to the world around him and realize his dreams too.
The production was the culminating event of "Celebrate the Arts," an annual, weeklong celebration featuring a teach-in with more than two dozen local artists, professional and student performances, and student visual artwork displayed throughout the school and juried in Middle and Upper School.
