Outdoor Club trip to Shell Key

Upper School News

Last weekend Shorecrest’s Upper School Outdoor Club sponsored an annual overnight campout on Shell Key. On Saturday, March 30, nine Upper School students launched canoes from the Fort De Soto boat ramp and paddled all of their overnight gear to a chain of islands - part of the Shell Key Nature Preserve. They paddled through mangrove channels and across a sandbar, and saw wonderful Florida’s wildlife first-hand, such as hermit crabs, ghost crabs, cormerands, and dolphins. When they arrived on the island they dug a fire pit, set up tents, explored the island, and cooked meals over the fire. They watched the sunset over the horizon and watched the sun come up in the morning the next day while enjoying breakfast.

The annual trip is always well-attended and loved by everyone who has gone. Hope to see you next year!
