Seventh Grade Music Performance

On Thursday, the seventh grade students performed choral versions of songs from an important time period in the evolution of rock and pop music. During this quarter, they have been learning about song structure and are currently working on writing their own song; lyrics and music! Through this experience, they are also learning that a good song is a good song, no matter when it was written. 

 

Their performance began in the Janet Root Theatre with none other than Buddy Holly's hit from 1957, "Everyday" followed by the upbeat hit from 1958 by Danny and the Juniors, "At the Hop" (Oh, baby!). Naturally, you can't have a program like this and not include an Elvis hit. The students brought the level down and softly sang, "Can't Help Falling in Love" from 1961, which Elvis sang in the film "Blue Hawaii."

How do you follow Elvis? You follow it with a song that is considered one of the greatest songs ever written and a song that the students may be humming for many years to come: "Stand By Me" by Ben E. King. 

 

To wrap up their performance, the Chargers sang two songs from a group who originally based themselves off of Buddy Holly's style, The Beatles! "Can't Buy Me Love" from 1964 was followed by the classic 1968 hit "Hey Jude." In the final Coda the students walked forward off the risers to the foot of the stage singing and inviting the whole audience to sing along with them to the end.  "Nah....nah, nah....na-na-na-nah...., Hey Jude!"
