US Performing Arts Presents "Sweeney Todd"

Arts Upper School News

Intrigue and revenge will take center stage at Shorecrest Preparatory School’s Janet Root Theatre when Shorecrest Performing Arts presents the musical “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.”

Shorecrest continues a decades-long tradition of “Celebrate the Arts Week,” that puts the Arts at center stage. During the annual event series, students from preschool through 12th grade engage in arts education on campus and in the local community. The week of April 18-23 will feature music and theatre performances, student artwork displayed throughout the school – and juried in Middle and Upper School, arts-related field experiences in the St. Petersburg community, sidewalk chalk drawings and more, including our annual Grandparents and Special Friends Day celebration.

This year the week culminates with the Shorecrest spring musical production of “Sweeney Todd.” Performances are at 7:30pm on Thursday, April 21, Friday April 22, and Saturday, April 23. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for students. Faculty/Staff of Shorecrest receive one free ticket.

“Sweeney Todd” has become a worldwide success since being awarded eight Tony Awards (including Best Musical) for its Broadway premiere. Stephen Sondheim's challenging score and Hugh Wheeler's thrilling script deliver a theatrical treat that has simultaneously shocked, awed and delighted audiences across the world. In the infamous tale, Sweeney Todd, an unjustly exiled barber, returns to nineteenth century London seeking vengeance against the lecherous judge who framed him and ravaged his young wife. The road to revenge leads Todd to Mrs. Lovett, a resourceful proprietress of a failing pie shop, above which he opens a new barber practice. Mrs. Lovett's luck sharply shifts when Todd's thirst for blood inspires the integration of an ingredient into her meat pies that has the people of London lining up.

W. Scott Warfel, Shorecrest Upper School Theatre teacher, directs the cast of 23 seasoned Upper School Thespians. Musical direction is by Michael McCarthy, with choreography created by Madi Willet. Brad Miller is Technical Director, Zoe Henry ’21 is Stage Manager, and Stacie Steinke is Associate Producer and Costume Coordinator.

This show is recommended for audiences in seventh grade and up.
