Shorecrest Sailors Win District Keelboat Qualifiers
October 08, 2014
The Shorecrest Sailing Team has won another event, this one qualifying them for the inaugural ISSA High School National Keelboat Invitational.
Last weekend, seven schools sent teams to St. Petersburg to compete in the first-ever high school district qualifiers in keel boats. A keel boat is a larger sailboat that uses a heavy keel for ballast and stabilization. Unlike the dinghies our sailors normally sail, keel boats require more team members, and racing them puts a premium on teamwork. Four sailors raced on each boat.
Nic B, Pat S, Josh D and Kyle D represented Shorecrest, and comfortably won the event (winning 7 races!) with 16 points after ten races. Sarasota Military Academy was second with 24 points and Antilles School from the US Virgin Islands was third with 34 points.
The National Invitational will be held in St. Petersburg, November 22-23. Full scores from all high school sailing events are at scores.hssailing.org. Make a plan to watch and cheer for your Charger sailors in November.
