What a whirlwind season it has been! The JV teams ended their season at ODA on March 27th and we look forward to training over the summer and practicing for the next season. Remember, tennis is not a seasonal sport. It requires year-round work to play at the JV and Varsity level!
The Varsity teams completed their last week of dual match competition and are now preparing for post season tournaments beginning Monday at St. Stephens. Post season play tests all of the hard work that we have put into the season and really is what the dual match season leads up to.
Last week, both girls and boys varsity teams faced very stiff competition with matches against Admiral Farragut Academy, St. Stephens Episcopal School and Out of Door Academy.

Girls Varsity:
The girls varsity team continued what has quietly become a breakout season for the team. Out of 15 matches played, their overall record was an astounding 11-4! It was a totally spectacular dual match season for the girls. Significantly, the girls beat ODA twice this season, a traditional powerhouse in our District. This week ended with a win against AFA and ODA and a loss to St. Stephens, the other traditional power house in our District. But the Charger Girls have so much to be proud of! Last night's match against ODA the girls won 4-2 led by Melanie F and Bella R dropping tough matches at the 1 and 2 spot but the team then went on to win the 3, 4, and 5 positions as well as the 1 doubles 8-0. Wynn B d. Lara F 6-1, 6-4; Sofia M d. Sima K 7-5, 4-6, 10-4 and Kirsten P d. Carley M 6-3, 6-4 after being down 1-4 in the second set!
I cannot say enough about the effort that most of the girls have shown this year and we are looking forward to a good performance at the Districts. Beyond that, I am so excited about the direction of the program and looking forward to additional improvements for next year.

Boys Varsity:
The boys varsity team has had a solid season also with an overall 8-6 record with 14 matches played. The loses again came against the traditional district powerhouses of St. Stephens and ODA, but the Charger boys beat ODA yesterday in a tightly contested match 5-2. Led by Jack L the number 1 player for the team, he has now twice defeated ODA's best Josh S, this time in a tough 3 set match dropping the first set 1-6, winning the second set in a phenomenal come from behind trailing 2-5 to win the second set 7-6 tie break then going on to win a seesaw third set tie break at 10-8! Luis S at the 2 won convincingly 6-1, 6-3; followed by Mathew D at the 3 who lost his match 4-6, 1-6. First year varsity player and tennis phenom, sixth grader Stefan B, battled from a much bigger and stronger opponent to win 6-4, 6-1. At the 5 position Tyler D fought hard but lost 1-6, 0-6. Both the 1 and 2 doubles teams Jack L/Luis S and Mathew D/Stefan B won 8-2 and 8-4 respectively. This week the boys defeated AFA 6-1 but lost to St. Stephens 0-7.
Our Chargers are always competitive with the stronger teams in the District but want to build on this season so we can start ending in the W column consistently against teams like St. Stephens. I am excited about the teams prospects for District competition and beyond post season play, I have already started to put our practice sessions together for next season. I am very proud of all of the players on all of the teams, including the JV and developmental squads. We are developing a formula that will improve the skill set of all students who can commit to the team at various levels.
