Block Play: Building a Child's Mind

Lower School News

A new Shorecrest supply of a century-old toy has first graders engaging in engineering, creative problem-solving, and negotiation - all by building with blocks! According to First Grade’s Mrs. Densa, “Blocks are toys that grow with children. By building with blocks the students are learning socially, physically, intellectually and creatively.” Developed in the early 1900s by progressive educator Caroline Pratt, blocks remain an integral tool in child-centered education.

As a complement to the study of community in Lower School, block building helps students reflect and reconstruct their own physical communities, all while building their classroom communities by sharing, working together and respecting each other’s buildings.
