Ocean Study Guest Experts Visit First Grade

Lower School News

First grade had two fantastic guest experts during their Ocean Study this week. On Monday, Shorecrest dad Chris Jones visited and shared his vast knowledge all about the coral reefs that grow in warm ocean waters. We learned about the many plants and animals that live among the coral reef. We were amazed to see the many different kinds of coral. We saw finger coral, staghorn coral, lettuce corral, and even brain coral! First graders were able to guess its name as they made a connection to their recent human body study. It actually looks a little like the human brain! Thank you, Mr. Jones!

Then on Tuesday, there was a fishy smell in the first grade project room as Upper School science teacher Lisa Peck brought sea urchins and squid to dissect with the first graders. We are so lucky to have such amazing opportunities to learn about the ocean and its inhabitants. What better way is there to learn about the animals that inhabit the waters that surround Florida?

Next week read about the first grade field experience at Tampa Bay Watch - swimsuits required!
