Simple Machine Learning in Third Grade

Lower School News

Third graders are studying simple machines. While deep in their Force and Motion inquiry, the generous Shorecrest maintenance department let students use some their tools. Students have tinkered with catapults, pulleys, screws and wedges. They hammered nails into wood scraps, used screw drivers to wedge and unwedge screws, and even used a power drill.

One class was challenged by their teacher to create a pulley system to carry a load from one point to another in only 20 minutes. This was a great activity to encourage teamwork, creativity, and implement material learned from the unit.

Classes also worked with Ms. Deegan in the technology lab to build and program LEGO robotics in conjunction with the unit. Students selected whether to build a catapult or pulley system for their robot and program it as well.
