Nature Self Portraits

Arts

In Junior Kindergarten, the children create self-portraits every month. With the help of a mirror, they observe themselves and their features (eyes, nose, mouth, etc.) This activity helps the children develop a sense of identity, while also exercising their creativity and fine motor skills.

This week, students in Ms. Rosas' and Mrs. Trayer’s class created self-portraits using natural items, such as twigs and flowers found in their yards. Children first received a self-portrait demonstration video from Mrs. Trayer. Then they were inspired to gather materials from nature. During their Zoom session, they reviewed what a self-portrait is, released their inner artists, and shared their favorite activities to do at home.

“A self-portrait is a picture of your body,” Ari and Cole reminded everyone.

“These purple petals are my leggings,” Vivian explained about her portrait.

"This was a highlight of distance learning for me. The children were all very engaged," shared Mrs. Rosas.
