Congratulations to our Sunshine State Young Readers!

Lower School News

The Sunshine State Young Readers Award (SSYRA) Program is a statewide reading motivational program for students in grades Kindergarten through 8, sponsored by the Florida Department of Education (DOE) and Florida Association for Media in Education (FAME). The purpose of the Program is to encourage students to read independently for pleasure. Readers of 3 or more books may be eligible to vote for their favorite in the spring.

Each fall the Sunshine State Young Reader’s Award contest is part of the literary curriculum offered to students in Shorecrest third and fourth grades. Lower School Media Specialist Mrs. Smay provided an introduction to the program via Webex this year, and provided the teachers with links to this year’s book trailers to share with their classes. 36 third and fourth grade students voluntarily participated in this year's Sunshine State Young Reader's Award voting contest. They read three or more of the books on the current year’s list of 15 titles. It was up to them to do this before the statewide voting in the spring.
