Second Grade Entrepreneurial Beekeepers

Second graders at Shorecrest learn about plants and pollinators throughout the year, and visit the school garden and beehive frequently. This has inspired Lily P. ‘32 and Brandon S. ‘32 to work together to start a beekeeping business called Bee Life. During school and Extended Day they planned a trip to buy the wood necessary to build their beehives, they determined pricing for items they will sell and they also have business plan questionnaires they have filled out together. All of this was presented to their classmates earlier this month.

After a few weeks of insistence, their parents helped plan a beehive construction day. They got together during the weekend and built three "starter hives.” 

 

Their collaboration, entrepreneurial spirit and excitement to do something good for the Earth all on their own brings together many lessons learned while in the student-centered, project based Lower School at Shorecrest. 

 

“This was ALL their idea... and it's awesome! These two "Shark Tank"-watching entrepreneurs found each other, and the bee project work took on a life of its own. Thanks for the part you have played in their curiosity and excitement! It will be fun to see where this goes,” one excited parent of the pair shared with second grade teacher Stephanie Johnson.
