Composting in Fourth Grade

As part of the fourth grade Sustainability unit, students learn about waste and what it means to throw things "away." There's no such place as "away" -- where does trash actually go and what happens to it when it gets there?
Fourth graders are learning alternatives that are more sustainable rather than tossing and wasting. This week "Farmer Ray" visited the Outdoor Classroom and Garden and discussed the science of composting. Ray Wunderlick is a former Shorecrest student and perennial consultant on campus regarding all things gardening. Farmer Ray taught the dos and don'ts of composting and gave the students an opportunity to test their knowledge through hands-on experience.
