Your Shorecrest Chargers have had a busy schedule during winter break, with our own holiday tournament and the Berkeley Invitational with state ranked teams.

Before the break started we took on district rival Calvary who had designs on halting the Charger 15 game district win streak. With a minute to go and down by 5, things didn’t look good to keep the streak alive. But... Brady to the rescue with a 3 pointer in the closing seconds and the game went to OT! The Chargers let their first OT lead slip away, but put down the hammer in the second OT. Marcus had a particularly good game with 26 points, 14 rebounds and 3 blocks.

The Chargers then opened our own tournament with an easy win against Carrollwood and had minimal resistance from Pinellas Park in the semi-final game. This game was a good example of how far the program has come. Four years ago, we beat Pinellas Park to initiate our new facility, beating the 8A public school, which was a huge deal for little Shorecrest beating a big public school. But after 4 years of ratcheting up the competition, playing at higher levels in summer camps and Wildwood leagues against the large St. Petersburg HS’s, we not only expect to compete, we "believe" we can beat these large schools. So the relatively easy Pinellas Park win was expected.

The final on Monday was another game the team believed they could win. Newsome was coming in the game 13-1 and state ranked and had destroyed a good Clearwater HS team in the semi-final. They were tall and athletic and had us by 3-4" at every position.
Even with a poor shooting night for Shorecrest, we had a side inbounds possession with a tie score and 2 seconds to go to win it. But we missed and we couldn’t recover from a key turnover and missed FT’s down the stretch. The team learned again on this night that we can compete with anyone.

Back to school and back to district competition, the team played Indian Rocks Christian, who has always been a tough win. The game was tight for the first half, with the Charger’s surging ahead at halftime 29-20. It was the Brady show in the first half with 3-3’s and 20 of the team’s 29 points. Marcus let his presence be known in the 2nd half, in one 30 second stretch recording 3-block shots to go with a tenacious dunk to get the Chargers up 15. The team was never threatened from there at they held off the pesky Golden Eagles. On the night Brady had 31 points, his season high, and Marcus added 18, Kent K. had 12.

The Chargers are 9-4 and 5-0 in District play.
