Sailing on to FIFTH National Championship!

Last weekend, the sailing Chargers won their fifth regional championship and qualified for all five national high school championships this year, cementing their reputation as one of the best high school sailing teams in the nation!
Officially called the SAISA Team Racing Championship, the regatta was held in Sarasota and featured teams from Florida, South Carolina, and the Caribbean. This event was sailed in a team race format; each high school has a three-boat team that race together in a match against another school’s three-boat team. The top two teams from the regatta qualified for the ISSA Team Race National Championships to be held in Chicago, IL, on May 23-24.
Shorecrest went 11-4 over the two-day regatta, but the competition was so close that there was a three-way tie going into the last race, setting up a showdown for the two qualifying spots at Nationals. Shorecrest prevailed to win the event and an unprecedented fifth SAISA Championship!
High school sailing is a year-round sport that has five different disciplines: singlehanded (divided into Laser and Laser Radial), doublehanded, keel boat, and team race. Each has a regional championship and a national championship. Singlehanded is one sailor in a boat, doublehanded is two sailors per boat, keel boat is 4 or more sailors in a large boat, and team racing is where each team has three doublehanded boats that sail a match against another three-boat team.
