Freshman Honored by City: Volunteer of the Year

Upper School News

Park benches have a long-standing history in St Petersburg, Florida. At one time there were as many as 5,000 benches on the streets with a seating capacity of 25,000, allowing locals and "snowbirds" to spend time in the beautiful weather together. The popularity of the benches even gave St Pete the nickname City of Green Benches.

Last year, freshman Will H focused on bringing people together in his
neighborhood of Allendale Terrace. A sitting area used to draw dog walkers and friendly faces to gather and socialize, but the benches had since grown dilapidated and the area was overgrown. Through his eighth grade Passion Project, Will (with some help from his family and friends) rebuilt the area. With the completion of his project, people can gather there once more.

This week, the City of St Petersburg recognized Will's volunteerism, naming him Volunteer of the Year. The award was presented at the City of St Petersburg Volunteer Social on September 29 at the Coliseum. "This is a great way to thank our volunteers for all that they do for us," a representative from the City stated.

The following video gives a view of Will's work and how it was received:
