First Grade Takes Science to Heart

Lower School News

Look at your veins through your skin. Why does your blood look blue inside those veins? First graders learned the answer to that question on Wednesday, when Upper School anatomy teacher Mrs. Peck returned as a guest expert during our human body study.

For this lesson, Mrs. Peck brought cow hearts to dissect with the children. Cow hearts are very similar to the human heart. We were able to see the four chambers of the heart, the aorta, and some of the effects that unhealthy eating can have on the heart. We learned how the blood is pumped in and out of the heart to carry oxygen as well as food to all parts of our body. We are so lucky to have such amazing learning experiences at Shorecrest!
