NAI Model UN 2016 Recap

Upper School News

Eighteen Shorecrest delegates attended the 53rd North American Invitational Model United Nations, hosted by Georgetown University, from February 11-14. The Charger delegates were in a variety of UN General assemblies, crisis committees, and historical committees. Shorecrest represented Niger, Namibia, and Norway in GA committees, while also representing the PCF (Communist Group) in the 1968 French National Assembly. Hailey S. and Greta M. were both in the U.S. Senate. Jarrod N. participated in the 2013 Papal Conclave, which was responsible for picking the next pope. Rhett K. and Brian K. were members of the British House of Commons.

During off hours, the group visited several museums on the National Mall and took in the Lunar New Year parade in Chinatown. However, visiting the Mali Embassy was the highlight of the trip. It was a small, intimate gathering of Shorecrest students with three embassy ministers and the Ambassador of Mali to the United States, H.E. Tiena Coulibaly. The Q and A session moved along at a brisk pace for an hour, and finally ended in a group photo and individual thanks from all in attendance. Truly, a remarkable experience!

Of the experience, senior Dylan L says, “At the conference, I worked with hundreds of students my age from all over the world (China, Puerto Rico, Italy, etc.) to come up with a realistic resolution to one of our society’s largest issues: terrorism. The conversations I had and friendships I built with some of these students were truly life changing.”

Mitchell G., a sophomore recalls, “I had a great time at NAIMUN! I wasn't sure I would like it at first, but it was an awesome experience. I learned a ton about how the UN works and had an opportunity to meet and interact with students from around the world.”
