While volunteering as a shorebird steward with the St. Pete Audubon Society, local artist Karan Porter was asked to lead a project organizing local artists in an art show for the Audubon shorebirds as part of Project Shorebird, and also to design and recruit artists for a mural project for the Audubon.
She had been scouting for a suitable location since October 2015, when Gina White, organizer of Shorecrest's Celebrate the Arts week, asked if Karan would volunteer at Shorecrest as a muralist.

The idea for an educational, interactive mural was well received by everyone at Shorecrest, and a partnership was born! Karan hosted a very successful open call Art Show in March at The ArtLofts. Many artists from all over Tampa bay, including students from Shorecrest, participated by selling art inspired by Florida shorebirds. Awareness and funds were raised to support the mural projects. Karan returned to Celebrate the Arts to work with both MS and LS students designing murals on campus. Check in future editions of Ebtyes for photos of finished murals!
