Students Tour Tropicana Field

Second graders went to Tropicana Field as part of their landmark study. The domed stadium in downtown St. Petersburg has housed the Rays since 1998 and has some unique features for a ballpark. Though originally built for baseball, there have been 14 other sports and competitive events held there. These include hockey, basketball, football, sprint car racing, gymnastics, soccer, tennis, weight lifting, table tennis, karate, motorcycle racing, equestrian events, track and figure skating.
Students learned the history of the stadium and a few fun facts during an all-access, behind-the-scenes tour. Students sat in the press box, went into the dugout and even got to touch real stingrays! Presented by the St. Petersburg/Clearwater Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Rays Touch Experience is the first of its kind at a professional sports venue. The 35-foot, 10,000-gallon exhibit is located just beyond the right-center field fence at Tropicana Field. This unique and educational fan experience has been created through a partnership with The Florida Aquarium. The beautiful cownose and southern stingrays are the same species that live in the waters of Tampa Bay and are cared for by the Florida Aquarium staff.
