Shorecest Upper School students have the unique opportunity to be part of a dolphin monitoring program. The pilot program is an extracurricular activity for the 2018-2019 school year. Students involved dedicate time throughout the school year to assist local scientists with collecting photo-identification and behavior data on resident dolphins that inhabit the waters of east Pinellas County.
Saturday, October 27, was the first training session with NOAA research scientist Jessica Powell. The session covered introductory content such as dolphin behavior and conservation efforts. Students practiced taking dorsal fin photos using the camera that will be used in the field when the data collection phase begins.
