Last week, second graders took a trolley tour of downtown St. Petersburg to view some of our city's historic landmarks. Starting at the The Vinoy® Renaissance St. Petersburg Resort & Golf Club, the trolley drove students through the streets passing and stopping at many of the sites recommended on the Historic St. Petersburg Downtown & Waterfront Walking Tour Guide Yellow Route.
Other portions of the trip included snack and free play in Straub Park, time to explore the banyan trees, and a walking tour along the waterfront.
Each field experience is more than just a "field trip" and directly relates to the project-based learning unit being studied. These experiences help to answer student curiosities and wonderings about the topic(s) they are studying. Upon their return to the classroom, students reflected on the experience, listed their favorite parts of the trip and connected information to prior and current learning.
Based on their reflections, it is apparent that the banyan trees are an area that will receive attention and research energy throughout the second grade Landmark study!
