SPARC and PARC perform "Beauty and the Beast"

Arts Upper School News

Over the summer of 2019, members of the Shorecrest Upper School SPARC club volunteered with PARC to put on the third annual PARC Inspired Theatre Program. PARC is an organization that provides opportunities for people with special needs through art, music, cooking classes, and much more. Shorecrest’s SPARC club, which stands for Students Promoting Acceptance and Respect in the Community, has helped create and run this summer theatre program for the clients at PARC.

Students volunteered once a week, almost every week from late June to early August. They wrote a script, helped assign roles, taught dances, and played theatre games with PARC clients. They rehearsed songs and dances together, and everyone was always excited to learn and get up and dance.

On August 8, 2019, PARC clients and SPARC club members performed "Beauty and the Beast" for a standing-room-only audience at PARC.

"This experience was so special because of the clients at PARC. They were always happy to see us, always positive, and would always put us in a good mood no matter what had happened that day. The pure joy they radiated when they performed is unexplainable, and everyone watching the performance could feel it. This was truly a rewarding experience and I am looking forward to a great year with SPARC and a great theatre program next summer!" said volunteer Brenna Dukes '21, SPARC's co-President for the 2019-20 school year.
