Sixth graders listened to music and used their imaginations to capture a visual image inspired by a song based on associations with color, pattern, emotion, location, or action. The songs they could select from to depict through are were: "Summertime" (Porgy and Bess), "Sing Sing Sing" (Benny Goodman), or "In The Mood" (Glen Miller).
They also listened to one of the original broadcasts of "Superman" which aired on the radio in 1940. Many students thought Superman's flying sound effect sounded more like a vacuum cleaner moving around a microphone... well, how else could you create the sound of a man flying through the air?
These exercises were in preparation for students to begin creating their own Radio Play with music, underscoring, and Foley (sound effects).
