Celebrate the Arts Week 2021 at Shorecrest

Art instruction is interwoven throughout the Shorecrest curriculum. To celebrate the lessons and skills taught all year, we open the campus to the community each spring during Celebrate the Arts Week. Although this year looks a little different due to social distancing restrictions, students were still able to explore art in new ways with their classmates and teachers.
Ms. Auletta and Miss Marilyn organized Lower School Celebrate the Arts week. A Monday Town Meeting video introduced the week and special activities to the children. During music class, students viewed a Film Festival and watched each other's stop-motion films (made in art studio) and music projects.

Other virtual and live conversations happened in classrooms:
- A percussion discussion with Mr. Parker - this video from a guest musician allowed students to play along with percussion instruments made in art studio.
- Read Aloud and Play Along with Mrs. Smay - a video from our Media Specialist.
- Mandala Mania with Mrs. Brier - this guest artist shared a video that later led to a Nature Scavenger Hunt. Classes collected plants and flowers to make a mandala. They shared photos of their project in Google Drive for others to see. (View some fourth grade flower mandala photos here.)
- Poetry in the Park - Classes recorded videos of themselves performing a poem aloud. These videos were merged into an ES video and an LS video, and will be shared on PowerSchool Learning pages.
Other videos were shared with teachers to use when they had time:
- A read aloud with Celia Cruz
- The "Count on Me" video created last year during distance learning
- Mrs. Smay's Trivia Game from Celebrate the Arts 2020
- A non-pitched percussion instruments lesson
- Balloon Guided Meditation
- Disco Yoga for Kids
The third grade will continue their celebration next month when they journey to downtown St. Petersburg to take the nationally acclaimed Mural Tour. There are so many wonderful murals around downtown that we know the children will love seeing!
In Middle School, the arts teachers Mrs. McCarthy (Music), Ms. Nelson (Theatre) and Mrs. Williams (Visual Arts) collaborated by preparing activities conducted during CPR. First, the students drew zentangles on paddleball boards. The activity will conclude with a Paddle Ball tournament between advisories.

During Community Time on Wednesday each grade level studied an artist and had a follow up activity specific to that art style. Fifth graders studied the art of graffiti artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. They emulated his work by using many different materials on black paper. Sixth graders watched a video about artist M.C. Escher and learned how to draw a tessellation. They incorporated Escher’s math and artistry into a grid project. They will finish the tessellation in art class by adding color. Seventh graders studied the art of Yayoi Kusama, aka "the Polka Dot Princess." Their art covered a broad spectrum of the use of polka dots. Eighth graders watched a great video about Ansel Adams and his photography. They went outside and took photos around the Shorecrest campus applying some of Adams' techniques. The results were shared in EDI class and their best photograph was printed. Artwork will soon be displayed around the Middle School.

Sixth graders were also challenged by Mr. Cruise in science class to create a short animation of the stages of the cell cycle. The students have been using microscopes to study cells and cell division over the past few weeks, and this assignment gave them a chance to show off their artistic talents. They used a stop-motion app called FlipaClip to draw the stages of cell division, and to animate the nucleus forming chromosomes and dividing into two nuclei during the process of cell division. Many students created very descriptive and artistic renditions of cell division. Here is an example of a fantastic animation created by Lili F.
