Las Aventuras de Enrique en Panamá

Faculty Spotlight Middle School News

Middle School Spanish Teacher Señora Miller (nom de plume Nayka Barrios Jaén) recently published a book written with her students in mind. “Las Aventuras de Enrique en Panamá” is a comprehensible input reader, and the Shorecrest Preparatory School Class of 2025 were enthusiastic beta readers.

“This is a Spanish easy reader for students at the end of Spanish 1 or beginning Spanish 2.” Mrs. Miller explained. “It is an adventure story that will take the readers to beautiful Panamá where an exchange student from Spain goes to learn about his family's historical past and its connection to the legend of a beautiful mountain named La India Dormida, which attracts many visitors to the valley.”

The delightful story is presented with creative and authentic illustrations by Panamanian artists. The main character, Enrique, has an adventure in El Valle de Antón, a crater of an extinct volcano with a unique climate that hosts a calm and friendly village.

Enrique is an Upper School student who lives in the historical, agricultural region of Andalusia, Spain. He attends an international school, and works at his family’s sunflower field business after school and on the weekends. He likes soccer and outdoor activities. In his junior year he is lucky to be part of a cultural-exchange program across the Atlantic Ocean in Panama. Enrique's host family lives and owns a hostel in El Valle, and they have a daughter named Lily with whom he has an immediate connection. The legendary trail and water springs of the mountain La India Dormida offer Enrique an enchanted experience.

The 59-page novella is an accessible and easy-to-understand format for maximum reading pleasure. The Middle School Chargers gave candid feedback about the unique story while learning new vocabulary and gaining cultural perspective.
