Shorecrest School

MS Robotics Advances to Regional Competition

Middle School News US STEAM

Shorecrest's Middle School FIRST LEGO League robotics teams had a great first showing at the West Florida qualifying tournament in Clearwater on December 7. Both teams had successful robot runs, ranking them in the top five of all participating teams. Additionally, this year’s challenge, Submerged, asked teams to identify and research a problem related to exploring the oceans. Team 1448, The Force, won the Innovative Project Award for their solution, a system of buoys to help reduce marine noise pollution to improve the health of marine ecosystems. Team 1449, The R2D2s, won the Core Values Award, recognizing them for their exceptional enthusiasm, sportsmanship, respect for team members, and support for other teams throughout the tournament. They are both shining examples of Shorecrest’s Core Values of Responsibility, Respect, Integrity, Knowledge and Compassion -- in action!

Both teams received a ‘Golden Ticket’ to advance to the regional competition on Saturday, January 18 which will be held at Shorecrest. The event will host 42 teams from the region and is open to the public - students and families are welcome to come cheer on their Chargers! Look for more details about the tournament after Winter Break.

A big thank you to Carson Granese ‘25, Patrick Meng ‘25, and Alexis Valance ‘25 who volunteered as referee, robot judge and tournament assistant. They have given back more than 450 hours (combined) to the FIRST robotics community during their time in Upper School.
