Shorecrest first graders took part in a STEAM design challenge to design a pom pom launcher using a spoon, rubber bands, and a real pumpkin as their base. STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) projects teach students how to think critically, problem solve and use creativity. With their pumpkins, the Chargers launched various size pom poms to discover which ones would go the farthest. Some of the students redesigned and adjusted their project after testing to make improvements. These early engineering skills are part of the design thinking process. It is empowering for students to be curious learners who seek their own creative solutions.
Each student presented their design to the class and shared what they thought was the easiest and hardest part of the project, encouraging public speaking skills and ownership.
