Experiential School
All members of the Shorecrest community were invited to celebrate the literary achievements of Black authors by listening to and participating in the 2nd Annual Black Authors Read-In. The open mic reading spanned the entire school day, breaking only during the Upper School lunch period, on Friday, February 3.
While many significant writers of the past, such as Langston Hughes, Toni Morrison, Claude McKay, Zora Neale Hurston, and James Baldwin will be remembered, readings of contemporary and lesser-known literary artists (including our own talented students) were shared as well. School-age appropriate readings across genres were provided. In all, 108 Chargers read 144 works by 77 authors.
This event will be nationally recognized and presented in concert with the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English, who, according to their website, "established the National African American Read-In in 1990 to make literacy a significant part of Black History Month." By taking part in this tradition, Shorecrest’s name becomes part of a national registry of participating groups, and we are afforded another opportunity to show that we are a school that champions both diversity and the arts.
