Second Graders Test Their Bee Vision

Lower School News

Second graders visited Upper School Science Teacher Mrs. Peck to learn more about plants. Mrs. Peck taught the budding scientists how bees are able to see ultraviolet light. While invisible to humans, “bee vision” makes finding nectar in flowers easier. They had a review of pollination and learned about the process of photosynthesis. Mrs. Peck guided students through the process of creating their own glass slides using elodea plant leaves. Finally, they used microscopes to view the cell walls and chloroplasts of these elodea leaves up close! Mrs. Peck also invited students to revisit their first grade study of the human body by viewing slides of tissue from different organs such as the brain and heart.
