Shorecrest Teachers Travel to FullSTEAM in Finland
Shorecrest First Grade Teachers Kristin Silver and Jeanne Simons recently traveled to Finland to attend the FullSTEAM conference organized by VisitEDUFinn in Oulu. Alongside 25 educators from around the world they immersed themselves in the Finnish education system, renowned for its methodologies and student achievement.
A notable aspect of the Finnish educational approach is the early introduction of STEAM education, with first-grade students engaging in both soft and hard crafts such as sewing and woodwork. This approach fosters creativity, problem-solving abilities, and hands-on learning from an early developmental stage.
“During this experience I visited three STEAM-focused schools,” Simons shared. “I observed the seamless integration of coding, technology, mathematics, arts, and sciences into daily instruction.”
Inspired by the Finnish pedagogy, Ms. Simons’ first graders began coding projects centered around their marine life unit of study, adeptly utilizing applications like ScratchJR to animate and communicate their knowledge.
The Finnish education philosophy closely mirrors that of Shorecrest Lower School by recognizing children as inherently capable and enthusiastic learners, and fostering an environment that allows them to showcase and nurture these qualities. The Finnish schools also have a FabLab, similar to the Shorecrest makerspace, where fourth graders use software, laser cutters, 3D printers, vinyl cutters, and more to create jewelry sold in a student-run online shop. The biggest difference the teachers found? Shorecrest Chargers never have to snowshoe or ski to school!
“I'm committed to keeping up with the changing educational needs of our students in today's digital world,” Simons promised.
This trip was supported by the Teachers Fund, created to provide funding for professional development and special projects, in support of Shorecrest’s strategic initiative of academic excellence.
