Vietnam Veteran Visit
Shorecrest Upper School students in Kayla Brazee's 1960s America class have been analyzing the Vietnam War for the past couple of weeks, coming to understand the American and Vietnamese objectives in the conflict, the strategies that were used by both sides, the draft lottery and the ongoing impacts of Agent Orange, among other topics.
To supplement the unit, Brigadier General Tom Draude (USMC Ret.), decorated combat veteran of both the Vietnam and Persian Gulf Wars, spoke to the class and other members of the Upper School student body. He shared his personal experiences in the Vietnam War and some of the lessons he learned. After the lecture he answered several student questions. General Draude was impressed by their questions, and the students learned a great deal about the war in return. In the words of General Draude, while our youth is only "20% of the population, they are 100% of our future."
