First Grade Tours Publix
Shorecrest first graders were treated to a Publix field trip this week hosted by Shorecrest RRI. They met with the Store Manager, a cashier/bagger, a deli associate and a cake decorator - who were amazing with the children and explained how their teams all need to cooperate every day. They let the kids interview them, demonstrated how to decorate a cake and gave the kids goodie bags and popcorn. Some students liked that the Manager was in charge of everyone. Some students wanted to make frosting flowers on cakes, until they learned the bakery opens at 4am!
The Shorecrest RRI team visited classrooms in advance and read a story about the importance (and the challenges) of saving money, and taught the children how to read price tags in a store.
At Publix, students were split into small teams for a scavenger hunt around the store. But they were not just looking for their favorite items! They learned about jobs in our community, how to compare prices of similar items, value, what $4 can buy, and how to identify sales.
