Chargers Tennis District & Regional Champs, Head to States

Athletics Upper School News

Shorecrest Chargers girls tennis completed their third District Championship in a row and won the Regional Championship for the first time since 2011.  The boys have been District runners up for the past several years, but won Districts and the Regional Championship - also for the first time since 2011.

The competition at Districts was very tough with the most difficult matches for girls varsity coming from Tampa Prep and Berkeley. The Chargers pulled away from the field in the semifinals and finals of Districts, setting up a Regional semifinal match against Carrollwood Day School of Tampa. The Chargers easily won that match 4-0 to advance to the Regional Final against the other Semifinal winner, Tampa Prep. In a close match for each singles line, the girls won 4 of 5 singles positions with a walkaway 4-1 victory!

The boys varsity tennis team was similarly challenged by Tampa Prep and Berkeley Prep. At the conclusion of the District match the Chargers were tied with Berkeley, forcing a playoff the next day for the runner up and championship. The Chargers won that match 4-2 and clinched the District Championship for the first time since 2011!  The Chargers won Regional Semifinals against Carrollwood Day School 4-1, setting up a third match in one week against Berkeley for the Regional Finals. The Chargers won 4-2 defeating Berkeley three times in a row within 7 days!

Both varsity teams will head to Orlando for State Quarterfinals on Monday, April 24, 2023, at Red Bug Lake Park (team)/Sylvan Lake Park (individuals) with the girls facing the Community School of Naples and the boys vs. ODA. The events begin at 8am. It is free to attend and cheer on your Chargers!
