Vote for sophomore Jordan T: Be More Inspiring Award

Sophomore Jordan T. is nominated for a WEDU Be More Inspiring award, and now she needs our online votes! The award recognizes an individual under the age of 21 who has distinguished herself in the community. She was nominated by Polly Stannard, Secretary of the Board of The Arc Tampa Bay Foundation. This is what Mrs. Stannard had to say:

Jordan's' interest in people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) started at an early age. Jordan's sister is an individual with I/DD. Jordan describes "her brain doesn't function as a typical brain would, making everyday tasks challenging." Her sister is her hero and best friend.

Jordan's involvement with The Arc Tampa Bay Foundation blossomed when she performed her 7th grade National History Fair award winning monologue for the Board of Directors. There was not a dry eye as the Directors witnessed Jordan's transformation into a turn-of-the-century parent of a "retard" (a term since removed from Florida Legislation). While researching her project, Jordan learned of the horrendous treatment of people with disabilities throughout history. She also learned of the formation of The Arc, a national organization bringing respect to this overlooked segment of our society. This dynamic now-15-year-old captivated the audience, just as she had during the History Day competition.

This summer, Jordan was a volunteer assistant in a therapeutic drumming curriculum offered on the campus of The Arc Tampa Bay located in Clearwater. Her poise, charm, and commitment was evident to every person she encountered. She was hands-on with the participants by drumming rhythmic beats on a djembe to foster the stimulation of new neural pathways in the brain.

"It was a magical experience. I was overjoyed to see the impact music was having on the individuals performing in drum class," stated Jordan.

Jordan anticipates being an advocate for those with special needs as she continues her life's journey. She states, "I believe the best way to change the world is to bridge the gap between people who are different from one another." We know this includes her beloved sister. This exemplary teen is a "Rising Star" in our community.
