December 6th and 7th were host to the annual Winter Music Concert in the Janet Root Theatre. The concert began with an energetic performance from beginning and returning fourth and fifth grade students. Saxophonists Libby C. and Riley W. introduced the two pieces, Hot Cross Buns and Go Tell Aunt Rhodie, and proceeded with an energy-filled performance.

This was followed by a performance from the sixth and eighth Grade Wheel Band and the Advanced Middle School Band. Students Gregory G., Oliver H., and Carson Q. introduced the pieces Ode to Joy, Chorale, and The Tempest. These students demonstrated the incredible amount of material they were able to cover in just one semester of study and performed at a high level.

Rock band “The Switch” followed the Middle School Bands with two energetic performances of “Float On” and “Pumped Up Kicks.” The audience responded to both of these songs by clapping along and cheering for their classmates in an excellent display of acclaim.

Two new Upper School classes, the iPad Music Ensemble and the World Music Drumming class, followed with arrangements of “I’m Yours” and “Three Little Birds.” These performances shed light on what is capable with non-traditional ensembles and garnered the audience’s attention with their incredible energy.

Violinist, CJ B., followed these songs with a very technical performance of Movement 1 of Bach’s Violin Concerto in A Minor. CJ’s solo was followed by the Upper School Band, who gave a powerful performance of Mr. Updike’s arrangement of Kentucky 1800.

Pianist Holly M. followed with a beautiful rendition of Mozart’s Sonata No. 8 in A Minor. The Upper School Band closed out the concert with a heartfelt performance of Intermezzo, from Bizet’s “Carmen.”
