Varsity Baseball Chargers Clinch Lead In Fifth Inning For Victory Over St. Pete Catholic

The Varsity Baseball Chargers nabbed the lead late in the game on April 17, in a 14-7 victory over St. Petersburg Catholic on Wednesday. The game was tied at six with Shorecrest batting in the top of the fifth when Owen Harris ‘20 singled on a 1-1 count, scoring two runs.

Shorecrest earned the victory despite allowing St. Pete Catholic to score six runs in the first inning, while the Chargers notched five runs in the sixth inning. The Chargers put the pressure on, lead by a walk by Ben Berner ‘19, a single by Will Rutledge ‘20, and a double by Harris.

Will Newton ‘19 earned the victory on the hill for the Chargers. He lasted four innings, allowing zero hits and one run while striking out ten. Jake Densa ‘22 threw two innings in relief out of the bullpen. Jack Zikmund ‘22 started the game for the Chargers. He surrendered six runs on five hits over one inning, walking one.

Shorecrest racked up 15 hits on the day. Harris, Newton, Ashton Reynolds ‘19, Rutledge, Macintosh Webber ‘21, and JC Barrott ‘22 all managed multiple hits. Harris led with three hits in four at bats. The Chargers also stole eight bases during the game.

Varsity Baseball Chargers Fall To IRC After Sixth Inning Score

The April 16th game against Indian Rocks Christian was a heartbreaker for the Chargers Varsity Baseball team, as they lost the lead late in an 8-7 defeat. Indian Rocks Christian was down 6-5 in the top of the sixth inning when they doubled on a 0-2 count, scoring two runs.
The Chargers collected 14 hits by Owen Harris ‘20, Brendan Smith ‘19, Will Newton ‘19, Will Forney ‘19, and Jack Zikmund ‘22; and Indian Rocks Christian had 11 in the high-scoring affair.

The Chargers opened up scoring in the second inning. Smith drove in one when he singled. Indian Rocks scored three runs in the fifth inning.

Aidan Counsman ‘21 took the loss for the Chargers. He allowed eight hits and three runs over two and a third innings, striking out one and walking zero.

Alex Alvarez ‘21 started the game. He went four and a third innings, allowing five runs on three hits and striking out one.
