The Shorecrest Varsity Sailing Chargers traveled to the US Sailing Center in Martin County on October 23 to compete in its second regatta of the season, the SAISA South Points #2. The light wind conditions at the Jensen Beach venue had Coach Todd Fedyszyn calling upon his “light air” skipper/crew combinations for the event.
Co-captain Guthrie Braun ‘22 skippered and Ainslie Braun ‘25 crewed in the A Division while Kate Danielson ‘24 skippered and Morgan Shirey '24 crewed in the B Division. The team took an early lead, but as the day wore on the Chargers dropped back. Bella Testa '23 came in to crew for two A races, and co-captain Ethan Danielson ‘22 took over skippering duties in the B Division in an effort to salvage a victory. In the end, Shorecrest slipped to 4th place out of 13 schools racing.
With two out of the seven regattas of the season in the books, Shorecrest is now tied for second in the District standings. The Chargers remain well within the threshold to advance since the top 7 of the 20+ schools in the region will qualify for Districts in the spring.
This week the sailing Chargers set aside their 420 dinghies in order to practice in the J70, a larger boat that requires a crew of four to sail. St. Petersburg Yacht Club will be hosting the keelboat district qualifiers this weekend. The winner will move on to the National Championship.
