Dr. Huguet, the Chair Department of General Surgery at St. Anthony’s Hospital, came and spoke to Shorecrest's Upper School Pre-Med Club last week. He discussed the many branches of healthcare, the persistence required to become a doctor, and showed pictures and explained surgeries he has seen or performed. Some of the surgeries that were shown were pancreatic cancer surgery, cysts, hernia repair, and gallbladder surgery.
Dr. Huguet shared his story of how he persevered even with people telling him he would never make it. He successfully became a personal fitness trainer where he developed professional athletes, but he still had a calling for medicine. He continued to graduate school at USF in Public Health and then went to USF medical school. Dr. Huguet proved everyone wrong by graduating medical school in the top 10% with Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honors and this allowed him to get a General Surgery Residency with Mayo Clinic. On the board exams Dr. Huguet was in the top 1% in the nation!
Dr. Hugeut preaches that failure is part of the process and to never let people tell you what you can’t do. He created Bay Surgical Specialties, a minimally invasive institute of surgery in 2019, and a weight loss program (bariatric surgery) that received a center of excellence designation. Dr. Huguet chose general surgery because of its variety and specialized in advanced laparoscopy which only makes little incisions to perform a surgery and results in less pain and faster recovery. Dr. Huguet has also performed robot-assisted surgery, which makes smaller incisions and gives the surgeon wrist movement in the abdomen.
Dr. Huguet brought in a robot suturing simulation for club members to try out and he is offering high school students the opportunity to observe surgeries! If you are interested in shadowing Dr. Huguet, please contact Mrs. Peck in the Center for Medical Sciences.
