A Student's Study of Medicine in the Military

Shorecrest senior Jaina Swann '22 is passionate about both the US military and studying medicine. She combined the two topics and created a semester-long independent study course. To take the class, Jaina had to create a course proposal and submit it to Shorecrest’s curriculum council last year. It was approved with Lisa Peck, Director of Shorecrest Upper School’s Peck Center for Medical Sciences, as her sponsor.
Throughout the fall semester, Jaina investigated the history of medicine in the military, outlined different medical paths within the military, and discovered surgeries each profession would perform. As her final project she created a website to share what she learned, which also dives into the anatomy of the systems involved in the surgeries.
"I hope my website is informative to all readers," Jaina shared. "This course opened my eyes to the myriad of ways that one can pursue medicine in the military, and no one way is better than the other because they have one common goal -- to serve those who serve.”
