Chargers Earn National History Day Outstanding Affiliate Award

Upper School News

Students from all over the world participated in the National History Day® (NHD) contest. They began by presenting projects in classrooms, schools, and districts in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, American Samoa, and Department of Defense and International Schools abroad. Top entries were invited to the state/affiliate level contests. The top two entries in every category at the state/affiliate level were then invited to the National Contest. The National Contest is the final stage, and was held virtually June 12-16, 2022.

Through documentaries, exhibits, papers, performances, and websites, students presented research projects addressing topics related to the 2022 NHD theme Debate and Diplomacy in History. At the National Contest, first, second, and third place awards are presented to the top entries in each category and division. In addition, there are special awards and outstanding affiliate entry awards. Two entries from each NHD affiliate receive an “Outstanding Affiliate Entry” award sponsored by the National Park Service.

Congratulations to Shorecrest Chargers Jacob Mandell ‘23, Matthew White ‘23 and Dylan Winer ‘23 who won an Outstanding Affiliate Entry Award for their website “Debate, Diplomacy and the Avoidance of Nuclear Armageddon: The 1956 Suez Crisis.”

NHD teaches critical thinking, writing, collaboration and research skills through self directed project based learning. The student-centered, hands-on approach connects perfectly with Shorecrest's educational philosophy.
