Fifth Graders Win Art Contest at SPIFFS

Shorecrest fifth graders recently attended SPIFFS, the St. Pete International Folk Festival, which was held at Vinoy Park in St. Petersburg. The festival is a wonderful complement to the fifth grade Social Studies World Geography curriculum.

At the festival, students had the opportunity to experience and interact with approximately forty different countries’ foods, music, dance, art, language, and geography. At the various booths, students chatted with people from around the world and participated in a drum circle. They learned so much at this cultural celebration of the St. Pete community!

SPIFFS hosts an annual student art contest, and this year's theme was Fruits of the World. Prior to visiting SPIFFS, the fifth graders researched fruits from around the world and completed artistic representations in the style of Giuseppe Arcimboldo, an Italian painter best known for creating imaginative portrait heads made entirely of objects such as fruits, vegetables, flowers, fish and books. Shorecrest Middle School teachers selected 13 students’ artwork to enter into the art contest. The fifth graders brought home first, second, and third place ribbons and prize money! Congratulations to first place winner Will F., second place winner Sophia T., and third place winner Diana M. The students received their awards on the main stage of the festival.
