Students Sharing their Heritage

Arts

Fourth grade Spanish class had a special visitor this week. Eighth grader Sofi R. talked to students about her family from Venezuela and Colombia. Sofi is bilingual, and she spoke to the students in Spanish and English. She played the Cuatro venezolano, a typical instrument from Venezuela similar to a ukulele. She also sang a beautiful song about Venezuela, which spoke about its landforms and the beauty of the country. With Sofi's performance as inspiration, the children then tried to write their own songs about Spanish speaking countries.

This weekend, Sofi will play Dorothy in the Middle School production of "The Wizard of Oz." She sang "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" for the fourth graders and reminded them that the show will only be this Friday night and Saturday afternoon.
