Homecoming 2019

Athletics Upper School News

In October 2019, the full Shorecrest community celebrated Homecoming. The theme this year in Upper School was: Shorecrest Road Trip.

On Thursday, October 10, the Homecoming Court was announced during an Upper School assembly. The Homecoming Court is selected by the senior class. Congratulations to the following members of the Class of 2020 (pictured): (back) Jacob Channer, Kyle Levine, Brett Danyali, Reece Lettellier, Lucas Murphy; (front) Mary Lewis Tunno, Grace Leary, Isabella Acuna, Lauren Ballestra, and Christina Steffens. The Homecoming Queen and Mr. Spirit will be chosen from the court by the US student body and announced at the Homecoming Football game (more info below.)

Homecoming Week kicked off on Monday, October 14, and Tuesday, October 15, when Upper School students participated in themed costume days: To The Moon Monday (photos) and TV Tuesday (photos). (The themes change from year to year.) During break, individual students and full grades were judged by US teachers on their creative wardrobe choices. Each grade also designed a felt banner that was hung in the Rec Gym and judged.

On Tuesday, students in The Experiential School were treated to a pep rally that was just their size. Read more about it here.

Buried in the middle of the week was PSAT day (Wednesday, October 16). On that day, sophomores and juniors sat for the PSAT most of the day. Freshmen visited Busch Gardens (photos) as part of a Physics / bonding day. The seniors enjoyed brunch, bonding, and shuffleboard (photos) at the St. Petersburg Shuffleboard Club from 10am-Noon.

On Thursday, the four Upper School grades competed against each other in a variety of athletic and trivia competitions. [View photos and video clips here. Also check out Shorecrest Instagram for more.] Traditional favorites included Powder Puff football and cheerleading, crab soccer, and a Jeopardy-style Brain Bowl. Items brought in for the food drive benefitting The Kind Mouse were tallied as part of the scoring.

To show their spirit, each grade is assigned a color. Students often dress in their class color from head to toe. The class colors this year were:

The full Alpha through 12th Grade school community gathered for a green & gold pep rally on Friday, October 18 in the Crisp Gym at 1:45pm. The spirit-filled afternoon included cheerleading performances - including the Little Sparks, relay races, and more for all students. [View a video of the Little Sparks routine here.] [View photos.]

Chargers Alumni were invited to a pregame tailgate in the new Charger Commons. The Class of 1994 and 1999 kicked off their 25th and 20th reunions with a trip back to campus for the tailgate and game.

Homecoming means football! The Chargers football game was on a stormy Friday, October 18. During halftime, the 2019 Homecoming Court was presented and the Homecoming Queen and Mr. Spirit were crowned by last year’s Queen. Congratulations to Mr. Spirit 2019 Jacob Channer and the 2019 Homecoming Queen Grace Leary! [Photos here.]

Shorecrest also honored the senior athletes of the football team, cheerleaders, golfers, and cross country team with a brief ceremony. Due to the wet weather, ceremonies were held in the Crisp Gym.

The Football game final score was Chargers: 30; Ocala Christian: 0.

The festivities concluded on Saturday, October 19, with a Homecoming Dance for all Upper School students at the St. Pete Yacht Club.

The Freshman class gathered before the dance at The Vinoy Renaissance Resort for a preparty and group photo. A special thank you to Freshman class parent Krista Weitz (Chase’s Mom) for being the Photographer at the event. She distributed photos to the entire Freshman class.

Thanks to Erin Mullins '20, Krista Weitz, and various Chargers faculty/staff for contributing photos all week long!
