Alpha visits 3D Art Studio

Arts

This year, faculty of The Experiential School of Tampa Bay chose to explore clay with our students because of the opportunities this material offers for play and communication, physical experimentation with force and tools, thinking, imagination, and fine motor development.

Alpha students are naturally curious about the properties of clay and explore it with their senses. They pinch, pull, smell, squish, roll, coil it, flatten, break it into pieces, and fuse it together. They also add herbs and loose parts to clay in the classrooms and use their creativity to represent objects with clay.

Last week, alpha classes visited the Upper School 3D art studio, led by faculty member and Shorecrest parent Casey McDonough. This jumpstarted their exploration into clay.

In Mr. McDonough’s studio, students learned that when fired in a kiln, clay can change from soft to hard. They were excited by the idea of fire and transformation. They are looking forward to painting with glaze and seeing what happens when their clay pieces come out of the kiln.
