This week, Mr. Hodgson’s American Experience I classes conducted an archaeological surface survey at a shell midden on Boca Ciega Bay in hopes of discovering evidence of human habitation left behind by the earliest Native American inhabitants of Pinellas County. While practicing what they learned in the classroom, a number of students found pottery shards at the site which date to the Archaic period (6500 to 1000 BCE). The shards were left where they were found to maintain the site’s defining characteristic.
